Are you annoyed with all the talk of resolutions? On this New Year’s Day it’s time to get busy! Your life is about to change! Yada. Yada. Experts admit 92% of all resolutions go by the wayside. What about you? Did you keep even a single New Year’s resolution in 2015? Have you already broken your 2016 resolutions?
Last year many bloggers, including me, suggested you focus on a word. And again I’m reading blog posts which encourage you to focus on a single word for the New Year of 2016. I’m curious if you focused on a word last year and if it made any difference in your life?
I’ve been wondering if there is an effective way to focus on improving your life in 2016 which seems more natural? easier? more effective?
Let me propose a different approach. Why not pick a theme song for the year? Here’s the question: What’s your song for the New Year of 2016?
Music is such an integral part of our lives. Music can bring you to tears. Music inspires. Musics transports you back in time. Music motivates. Music can transform your life. Music can reduce stress. Music, according to some studies, can even repair neurological damage.
Here’s a few examples:
- Where would Rocky have been without “The Eye of The Tiger?”
- In 1964 Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” turned into the anthem of the Civil Right’s Movement.
- Who can forget how Frank Sinatra sang and lived this song: “I Did It My Way?”
Pick a song to inspire you for the New Year. Choose your song with care. Make it a song which has the possibility of impacting your life. What song has the potential to transform your life? Whatever song you select use it for inspiration and motivation. Harness the song’s energy to make 2016 a better year.
How do you force the song to change your life?
- Use the song for your ringtone.
- Embed the song title in your email signature.
- Use an app which makes it possible to serve as an alarm to awaken you with your chosen song.
- Set a recurring reminder on your cell phone to play your song every morning.
Here’s my song: “This is Gonna Be the Best Day of My Life” by American Authors. (This is weird: I’m writing this at the house of a family member. The TV is on. When I completed typing the song title I heard the song immediately start to play. I looked up and it was the tune was playing in the background of a Weight Watcher’s commercial.) My plan is to start every morning of the year with the song.
What do you think? Can a single song change your life help make 2016 transformational? I have no idea but I plan to find out.
I agree, Randy. Music has played a huge part in inspiring me. I write whole songs sometimes in my prayer journal because the words are so apropos. One song in particular that has encouraged me through the last few years, and I have sung it in church, is “Keep Making Me” by Sidewalk Prophets. It’s a prayer…”Make me broken so I can be healed….make me empty so I can be healed…make me lonely so I can be yours…” It’s a beautiful and meaningful song. The first one that popped into my mind when you asked the question. God truly blesses me through music…thanks, Randy! Happy New Year.
And to you!
Sorry – that should be “make me empty so I can be FILLED…”
What a fantastic idea! I love music & God has always used it over the years to speak to my heart…in good times & bad; it has comforted me, motivated me, inspired me, energized me and given me purpose in my younger years! I’ve done the New Year’s resolutions and admit I was in the 90 plus % that didn’t succeed in keeping them to the end of the new year! I chose a word in 2015 to focus on and cannot tell you now what it was! But picking a song sounds like something that would work for me!! The challenge will be choosing ONE! There are so many new & old ones that I love. So will go through the saved music on my phone & pray about one that would challenge & motivate my life in 2016! Thanks for a unique idea plus suggestions to keep it in front of us all year!
I’m glad the idea resonated with you! Please report back when you’ve chosen a song. I’d love to know what you decide.
I found my song, or rather, my song found me. I don’t usually listen to country music but I have some stations preset because Biff enjoys listening when we’re taking my car. I brushed the touch screen this morning starting up and “Jesus Take The Wheel” by Carrie Underwood was playing. I know myself and I struggle with control issues. I give things to God, only to pick them up again. I’ve got this God, and this and this… How rude, proud and arrogant of me to presume that I know better than He or that I’m better able to manage these things than He. I’ve been under conviction lately that I need to surrender to Him, that He desires a closer relationship with me and I’m getting in the way. So Jesus, I’m letting go, take the wheel and give me one more chance.
WOW!! What a great song for 2016. That inspires me. Thanks for sharing!
