Have you ever wondered what would happen if a new Toyota Rav 4 hit a cement block wall at 40 miles per hour? Probably not. Neither had I. But in case you are wondering, I can answer the question with full certainty.
I saw it happen right in front of me.
While cruising north on a four lane road I saw a driver making a sharp turn in front of me. Glancing in the direction of the hurtling car I noticed there was no road. Instead, there loomed a large cement concrete block wall.
My brain screamed: STOP! YOU ARE GOING TO…” BANG!
He never slowed down. The car hit the curb, bounced upward, and plowed through the cement wall. Blocks exploded. Dust flew. A hole appeared. And the car came to rest in the created hole with each bumper sticking out of opposite sides of the wall.
Seconds later, with cell phone in hand while talking to 911, I walked toward the car uncertain what my eyes would see. The dust from the blown airbags floated through the air in the front seat. The stunned senior citizen moaned but had no clue he had just taken out a concrete wall.
The EMS arrived in less than five minutes. The first question they attempted to ask the driver, who remained incoherent, was if he had diabetes. Then it made sense. He had slipped into a coma while driving down the road, oblivious to his direction.
How incredible! How dangerous!
But that’s how many people live. They go down the highway of life oblivious to where they are going and of the circumstances around them. They live life in a self-induced coma in an attempt to protect what sanity remains. Life has been hard. The pain accumulates. To survive they go on autopilot. And they keep speeding down the highway of life, blinded to everything.
Think of your life. Do you know where you are going? What is your goal in life? What is really important? Are you cruising down life’s highway oblivious to the people around you?
It took hitting a brick wall to awaken the driver of the now crumpled car from his coma. If you are sleep at the wheel I’m hoping it doesn’t take that for you to wake up.
Maybe it’s time you took an intense inventory of your life. Ask yourself questions like these:
- Do the days do by and I hardly remember what happened?
- Am I aware of the needs of people around me?
- Are my life goals in clear focus?
- Is there a brick wall ahead but I’m choosing to ignore it?
- Are their warning signs which I need to consider?
If you are on autopilot please allow this short post to be all it takes to wake up. Hey you! Pay attention. STOP! YOU ARE GOING TO…”
Are you waking up?
