How many good books have you read lately? And when I say good books, I don’t mean mindless romantic or sentimental fluff. I’m talking about good books that can change your life.
Reading fiction can inspire, thrill, amuse, and entertain. These are good returns for your time investment. But I’ve decided to use my reading time to improve my life. The literary world is exploding with authors who publish books that are able to impact your life in a positive way.
This is a subject close to my heart. I am an example of how reading non-fiction can positively impact your life. If you regularly read my blog you know I’ve been published on some big websites such as The Huffington Post and my book is for sale on Amazon and Barnes and Noble online.
If you think I’m bragging, please stop. Here’s the butt-ugly truth: I’m not bright enough to figure out how to make things like that happen. The examples happened because I am a reader of non-fiction. My “smartness” is only found in my decision to read good books in the area of my goals.
My challenge to you is simple: find and read ONE non-fiction book which will help improve your life.
Learn from the wisdom of others. Become inspired and informed on how to make this part of the journey the best part of the journey.
For some aging Boomers, it’s tough to read a good book because of physical limitations. Perhaps your eyesight isn’t what it used to be or holding a book in your hand is difficult. Please consider the purchase of a Kindle reading device from Amazon. You can purchase an entry-level Kindle for under eighty bucks which weighs under 6 ounces. It will hold thousands of good books and you can adjust the font size to your comfort. (If you want to check it, out click this Amazon link All-New Kindle E-reader – Black, 6″ Glare-Free Touchscreen Display, Wi-Fi – Includes Special Offers.)
Don’t let money stand in your way from reading good books. Anyone can read lots of good books for free. I often forget the public library still exists. Most libraries even have a selection of good books available in eBook format. And, if you poke around on the internet, you will find lots of free books. Even Amazon has many lists of good books you can download for free to your Kindle reader.
But there is still a major challenge for those who want to read good books. The number of choices are overwhelming.
How do you select the ONE good book to read out of the millions available which will improve your life?
Start by clarifying the area of your life needs improvement. This is important. Without this clarification you will be shooting in the dark when it comes to selecting good books. If you are struggling to answer this important question, I suggest your first book to read ought to be The ONE Thing. (If the book interests you please consider reading my ARTICLE on the subject were I talk about the book.) I’ll point you to it at the end of this article. If you need help, it will help you clarify the area in which you most need to improve.
Once you have a clear idea on what needs improvement in your life go to amazon.com. In the upper left hover over the word “Departments.” A menu will drop down. Go down and hover your cursor over the word “books.” To the right a new menu will pop up. On that menu simply click on the word “books.” Scroll down and check out all the options on the left side of the page. Find the category in which your book subject might reside.
Odds are good that the book you want will be in the “self-help” category. Click on it and note that it divides into many different categories. Again, find the category which interests you and click on it. Let’s assume you want to become a happier person. Click on the “Happiness” category. In the upper right corner of that page locate and click on “sort by.” Locate the phrase “most reviews” and click on it.
You are making progress. You are now looking at every book on Amazon in the happiness category sorted in terms of the most reviews to the least. This means you can now see which books are the most popular in your category. Scroll down through the list and look for a title which interest. Pay close attention to the number of average stars given by the readers. If the book doesn’t have an average of at least four stars I would avoid it.
After you find a book which has a lot of very positive reviews and the title interests you, click on the title to investigate the content. This will take you to the product page for the book. Study the page carefully. Read some of the reviews. You can also click on the cover of the book on the upper left of the page and see inside of it. There you will be able to study the table of contents and often even read the first couple of chapters.
Once you’ve decided, that of all the thousands of good books on the subject, this one is for you, then check out the buying options. If you have a Kindle, you can buy it and the download will start immediately. You can be reading in a matter of minutes. Or you can buy a physical copy of the book and have it delivered to you in a few days.
There’s no excuse for failing to read good books which can change your life.
If you want an even easier way to get started I’ve published a new recommended resource page. It is a collection of the good books I’ve read which have had a positive impact on my life. By the way, what’s the one book you would suggest others read to improve their life?
The only book worth carrying & rereading anywhere anytime is the Bible
The best for this life & your eternal life
Every answer to every question so constantly teaching you
Parables…..people…..perspective…..problems…..pure joy
No book equals it
The one book I would recommend for people wanting to improve their lives is “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl. I have read it many, many times and always find something new I hadn’t noticed before. It is truly a life-changing book!
