The response to Tom’s List has been very positive. In response to my initial post many of you signed up to be informed when weekly posts appear on randallhartman.com I am grateful for each reader who enthusiastically responded. If you missed that introductory post you can view it HERE.
I noticed, however, that some people read that explanatory post and did not sign up. And, there will be people in the next several weeks who will read that same post and not respond. This post is for you.
Here are 5 reasons why you really need to sign up to make sure you don’t miss a single one of the 50 commandments from that list.
1. The list is an amazing collection of the best truths gleaned from reading over 2,000 of the top books released over a the last 40 years.
Suppose someone gave you the assignment to read 2,000 books and make a list of the top 50 truths you discovered in those books. I can hear the moan coming up out of your gut. Who would want that assignment? But here’s the thing: that work has already been done. Even though his life ended early, Tom Drake completed that assignment. Many readers will not have had the privilege of knowing Tom. Let me just say that Tom would not waste his time on a truth if it did not have life changing potential.
Your task is to now take those already discovered truths and apply them to your life.
2. It is a way for you to make a personal statement that you are going to do something to improve your life.
How do I say this delicately? You and I are not getting any younger. Of course you already knew that! Time is slipping away. Now is the time to start upgrading your life. If you are happy with all areas of your life then maybe Tom’s List isn’t for you.
But honestly, one reason I am personally working through the list on my blog is that my life needs improved. I need to change. Now is the time for a life upgrade. And I want the world to know I an not going to be one of those people who just let life happen to me. I want to proactively suck the life out of my time on earth.
3. Tom’s List is a relatively easy way to make 2015 one of the best years of your life.
It is amazing how many people make New Year’s resolutions which often disappear by the end of January. As the weeks of the new year slide by, those resolutions become buried under a mound of good intentions.
One of the really hard parts in upgrading your life is to figure out how to work on the change consistently as the weeks go by. How do you make yourself work on those improvements week after week? When you sign up to receive notifications of new posts on my blog you will receive an email reminding you to go to the site and work on your life. That’s a reminder everyone needs!
4. You will gain insights from other people who are working on the weekly commandment.
Here’s what I hope. It is my dream that people will not only read the weekly post but will also respond. I’m looking for people to share his or her insights on how the truth hit them. Imagine the help each of us will receive as we learn from each other!
When people leave helpful comments this adds value to the truth. Think of it as a potential online collaborative workshop as we learn together. We really do need each other. There is power in a collective shared wisdom.
5. The list will force you to examine areas of your life that need improvement but you have chosen to ignore.
Items on the list will be presented each week in the same order as on the original list. As I studied the list I recognized that the truths seemed to be grouped together according to subject. That means, for example, we will spend several weeks working on the family and then on to another broad subject.
I don’t know about you but there are areas in my life that I tend to ignore when it comes to improvement. It’s so easy to turn a blind eye toward areas in my life that might make me uncomfortable or are not as interesting. Tom’s List will force each of us to take a look at areas which we often ignore.
So what do you think?

I’m really looking forward to working through the list Randy. Both because Tom was a good friend, but also because of the thoughts that you will add and the effect that thinking all of it through may have on my life in the coming year. You are so right when you said time is passing in all of our lives, and not to be wasted. Therefore, I am anxious to get started, and as Tom often said, “Play Ball”!
Play ball indeed! It’s time for all of us, especially me, to get in the game because the game really matters. Thanks my friend.
I appreciate this in way I can’t entirely express. In part it will be the voice I went to for advice on what to read or what to do in a variety of situations still challenging me every week. It will be a reminder to continue to be challenged as he certainly challenged me when I lived with him and even after. I suppose I could say Ive g row a but lax in some of those areas and will be glad to have those reminders and go back to his reading, as I certainly have not completed all the reading he has… yet :)
Thanks for commenting. Does this sound familiar: “Play ball!” I too am challenged by his words and memory.
